Tunado holds National MSP ON 16th April 2015

The platform which was held at the Uganda national farmers federation attracted a number or members, stakeholders and partners from Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries, Swiss Contact, Green and White and many others thus making a total of 55 Participants. Key sector priority issues were reflected on. The principal entomologist, MAAIF, Ms kangave Alice gave an overview on the National training manual which is to be translated into seven(7) different languages to cater for a wider coverage.

Mr. Joshua Kunya from Skills Initiative, Uganda also presented on the purpose of the tots which is to improve the quality and quantity of farm based trainers in beekeeping.
There was an exercise led by SwissContact on sustainability  “Who is going to do what and who will pay for what” The findings of the exercise showed that all of the stakeholders have a role to play but most striking was the finding that the beekeepers were now willing to pay for much of what is needed in the sector. Phionah Birungi, the Programme Manager TUNADO announced that TUNADO in partnership with Swisscontact Uganda were planning to award the best apiaries per agro-ecological zone in Uganda. This is meant to initiate competitiveness among the beekeepers. However, SCUG support will act as a kick starter to help TUNADO gain experience as it mobilises resources from private sector to sustain this activity. The essence here is to motivate and appreciate those with best practices at the same time documenting such practices for replication elsewhere. Additionally the awarded best apiaries will act as demonstration and learning centers within their regions.
Radio announcements will be placed on UBC radio and the most prominent regional radio stations, where calls for beekeepers with 20 beehives and above will be asked to register their apiaries to enter the competition for best apiculture enterprises. Watch out for the adverts this month.
